Scholastic Canada is working on a new series of classroom resources for grades 3–8. The Take Action For Reconciliation series features inquiry-based, magazine-style books that focus on Indigenous cultures, languages, and worldviews, along with the actions that people are taking to achieve reconciliation. Each book in the series is bundled with a teacher’s guide (including lesson plans and a pronunciation guide) and an accompanying website with recommended resources (websites, maps, books, and videos). The series has been developed by an Indigenous Advisory Team, and features content by Indigenous contributors including Suzanne Methot of Dragonfly.
Community Ties is the first book in the series, and is out now. The next book is Path To Wellness, which focuses on Indigenous concepts of health and well-being, the effect of colonization on Indigenous well-being, and actions we can all take to promote reconciliation in Canada.
By engaging students in rich discussions about reconciliation, these books build stronger communities and encourage students to become involved in civil society. That’s a blueprint for creating change.
